Springfield’s technology sector benefits from the presence of a strong cluster of IT firms, suppliers, and universities throughout the region. Springfield’s resources create a collaborative environment for entrepreneurs, researchers, investors, and designers to create, market, produce, and provide innovative goods and services in the technology sector.

The high tech hub in Springfield has been fostered by Missouri State University’s vision of an urban research park, and IDEA Commons is the product of that vision. IDEA (Innovation Design Entrepreneurship & Arts) Commons has an area of 88 acres that will be developed into an urban research park. As part of IDEA Commons, the Jordan Valley Innovation Center (JVIC) is partnering with existing companies like Lockheed Martin, Unidym/ Arrow-head Research and Brewer Science to conduct research and develop new products. Research is focused on nanotechnology, carbon-based electronics, bio-materials and biomedical instrument development.

JVIC does not act as a university tech-transfer facility nor business incubator. It acts as a technology accelerator by taking private research to manufacturing. Springfield Innovation, Inc. is a subsidiary of JVIC that helps entrepreneurs bring new technologies into the marketplace.

With seven universities offering degrees in computer science, the Springfield region is equiped for the growing demand by the technology sector. Technological firms such as HealthMED, Intuitive Web Solutions, and Jack Henry & Associates, Inc. all have benefitied from the Springfield region's strong workforce.
