Targeted Industry:
Power Intensive Manufacturing
City Utilities, the municipally-owned electric, gas, water and telecommunications provider for Springfield, has a long track record of bringing low-cost power to local manufactures. Plastic injection molders, metal fabricators, electronics manufactures and the like enjoy rates as low as 5 cents per kWh.
Recently, NorthStar Battery announced a second Springfield plant more than doubling its ability to produce batteries for the telecommunications industry that will be sold mostly overseas. The low cost power City Utilities provides made the decision to build in the U.S. a profitable one.
In a 2008 comprehensive study by Ball State University's Bureau of Business Research, Missouri ranked #1 for manufacturing and logistics. Low cost-of-doing-business and an emphasis on research and development gave the state the top grade for production-based industries.
