Springfield metro area exceeds 400,000 in population

In figures recently released by the Census Bureau, Springfield's 2006 Metropolitan Statistical Area population increased by nearly 10,000 people over the previous year. This increase pushed the metro area's population well over the 400,000 mark to 407,092.

The Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA, or commonly-referred to as "metro area") is defined by the federal government as Greene, Christian, Webster, Polk and Dallas counties.
