Population on the rise for the Springfield metro

The U.S. Census Bureau released its 2009 annual population estimates yesterday, confirming continued growth in the Springfield metropolitan area. In the past year, the five-county Springfield metro area population has grown by 4,756 residents moving the population to 430,900.
The new numbers represent a metro area growth rate of 1.1% since 2008 with an overall growth rate of 17% since 2000, making Springfield the fastest growing metro area in Missouri. Most importantly, the Springfield metro area’s rank in the nation’s largest metro areas has jumped 14 places from 125th in 2000 to 111th in 2009.
The Springfield metropolitan area is defined by the federal government as Greene, Christian, Webster, Polk and Dallas counties. For more area population statistics, click here.
