Population growth and what the numbers mean

Earlier this month the United States Bureau of the Census released its annual population estimates for counties across the nation. These estimates help to track area growth on an annual basis.

The Springfield region once again showed significant growth in the past year and continued as the state's fastest growing metro area. Also, Christian county was again the fastest growing county in Missouri.

Below is a breakdown of the varying geographic areas used to define Springfield's market and their corresponding 2005 population.

Springfield City Limits
Corporate city limits that includes nearly 80 square miles. Expanded only through annexation.

Springfield Metro Area
Metropolitan Statistical Areas are defined by the federal government based on the urbanization of a county and commuting patterns. Springfield's MSA includes 5 counties. MSAs are adjusted every 10 years after decennial census data is analyzed.

Springfield Region
Springfield's region is defined by the Ozarks Regional Economic Partnership, an out-growth of the Springfield Chamber. The region includes 10-counties.

Springfield Economic Area
To define Economic Areas the federal Bureau of Economic Analysis attaches each county in the U.S. to an MSA with which the county is economically tied.
