Expedia announcement promises quality jobs for Springfield
Aug 05, 2010
Expedia, Inc. today announced it will expand its Springfield operations by adding 500 new jobs. The company will hire for positions in customer service, financial operations, technical support and other roles that support its Expedia.com and Hotels.com online travel brands. Average annual salaries for the new positions will exceed the Greene County annual average of $33,924.
Today’s news follows an announcement in February that the company had leased 59,000 square feet of the former Springfield-Branson National Airport terminal. The company is currently renovating the terminal and will begin occupying it this month. When the expansion is complete, Springfield will be home to nearly 800 jobs in Expedia’s back-office operations.
"The Chamber and Springfield Business Development Corporation (SBDC) are pleased to work with Expedia on their expansion in Springfield, which is creating hundreds of quality jobs that directly impact our community,” said John Wanamaker, president of SBDC, the economic development arm of the Springfield Area Chamber of Commerce. “To have a company of Expedia’s caliber choose Springfield is tremendous news, further proving that Springfield is a great place to do business."
Today’s announcement is the culmination of a process of collaboration between Expedia and Springfield’s Partnership for Economic Development.
The Partnership’s members, the Chamber, Greene County, the City of Springfield and City Utilities, assist businesses that are relocating or expanding in Springfield. For Expedia’s expansion, that included working with the company to find appropriate real estate options, assisting in qualifying the labor force and leveraging incentives designed to spur job creation. The partners also assisted Expedia in securing services to meet the company’s extensive IT needs.
“Working together we can accomplish so much more than we ever could separately,” said Mayor of Springfield, Jim O’Neal. “This is a big day for our community.”
