SPRINGFIELD'S JOB GROWTH FAR OUTPACES
STATE AND FEDERAL RATES

Amidst the declining national economy, the Springfield Metro Area has produced very positive growth in the the number of jobs.  Comparing data from December 2002 to December 2001, Springfield experienced a 2.8% increase while Missouri showed a decrease of 0.3% and the U.S., as a whole, showed a 0.1% decrease.  Despite some recent plant closings and layoffs in the area, the Springfield market created a net increase of nearly 4,800 jobs this past year.
